Agadir Travel Guide 2026: Beaches, Things to Do & Where to Stay

Agadir Travel Guide

Agadir travel guide in brief: Agadir is Morocco’s main beach resort, a modern city on the Atlantic with a 10 km sandy beach, warm sea from summer to autumn and mild winters, about 3 hours from Marrakech by bus. It is not a medina city: it was rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake. Come for sun, the beach and day trips to Taghazout, Paradise Valley and Essaouira. Stay on the seafront for the beach, or in Taghazout for surfing, and plan 3–5 days.

Agadir divides travelers: some find it too modern, others love its long beach, easy-going atmosphere and reliable sunshine. This Agadir travel guide explains what the city really offers, how to get there, how long to stay, the best sights with prices, where to stay, the best time to visit and the best day trips, so you can decide if it is right for you. It is part of our Morocco travel guide.

A Short History: Why Agadir Looks So Modern

On 29 February 1960, an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 lasting just 15 seconds destroyed most of Agadir and killed an estimated 15,000 people (Wikipedia). The old Kasbah on the hill, built in 1572 by Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib, was reduced to its walls. The city was rebuilt a little further south as a planned modern town, which is why Agadir has wide boulevards and a seafront instead of an old medina.

Best Things to Do in Agadir

These are the highlights this Agadir travel guide recommends.

Relax on Agadir Beach

The crescent-shaped beach stretches over 10 km, with a seafront promenade lined with cafés, restaurants and hotels (Wikipedia). The bay is relatively sheltered, which makes it popular with families.

Ride the cable car to Agadir Oufella

The ruins of the 1572 Kasbah stand on the hill above the port, with the famous "God, Country, King" inscription and wide views over the bay. Since 2022, a 1,700 m cable car with 30 cabins links the Tildi bridge to the Kasbah (Arrival Guides). A non-resident adult return ticket costs about 130 MAD, and the restored Kasbah enclosure has a separate ticket of about 90 MAD for foreign adults, while the panoramic esplanade is free (Immersi Travel, September 2026). A taxi up costs about 30 MAD (Journal of Nomads).

Shop at Souk El Had

One of the biggest markets in Morocco, with about 6,000 stalls selling everything from spices and argan oil to rugs and tagines. It opens from 6:00 to 20:30 and is closed on Mondays; Tuesday to Thursday is quieter and better for bargaining (Culture Trip).

Stroll the Marina

The marina, part of the port complex, has Moorish-style buildings, shops, restaurants and cafés by the boats (Wikipedia). It is a pleasant place for dinner and an evening walk.

Visit Medina Polizzi and the Amazigh Museum

Since the old town was lost in 1960, the Medina d'Agadir (Medina Polizzi) recreates a traditional Berber village with craft workshops; entry is about 40 MAD including a drink (Journal of Nomads). In the city, the Amazigh Heritage Museum displays rugs, jewelry and musical instruments.

Surf in Taghazout and visit Paradise Valley

The surf village of Taghazout lies about 19 km north (Wikipedia), with schools for all levels. Paradise Valley, a palm-filled gorge with natural pools near Imouzzer, is about 58–60 km away and makes an easy half-day trip.
