Essaouira Travel Guide 2026: Best Sights, Where to Stay & Tips

Essaouira Travel Guide

Essaouira travel guide in brief: Essaouira is a laid-back, UNESCO-listed walled port on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, about 3 hours west of Marrakech by Supratours bus. Plan two nights (a day trip from Marrakech is possible but rushed), stay in a riad inside the car-free medina, eat grilled fish at the port, walk the ramparts at sunset and expect wind: it is Morocco’s kitesurfing capital. Temperatures are mild all year, about 18–23°C, which makes it a perfect break from the heat of Marrakech.

Essaouira is the opposite of Marrakech: smaller, breezier and much calmer, with whitewashed lanes, blue shutters, seagulls and a working fishing harbour. This Essaouira travel guide covers what you need for a first visit: how to get there, how long to stay, the sights with prices and hours, where to sleep, the fish market, the beach and the wind, costs and safety. It is part of our Morocco travel guide.

A Short History of Essaouira

People have lived here since antiquity: the Phoenicians traded on the coast, and King Juba II set up a factory for purple dye made from murex shells on the islands offshore, according to Journey Beyond Travel. The Portuguese built a fortress in 1506 and called the town Mogador.

The town you see today is much younger. In the mid-18th century, the Alaouite Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah (1757–1790) founded it as a royal port open to world trade, laid out by a French architect inspired by Vauban's fortifications at Saint-Malo, according to UNESCO. Essaouira became Morocco's main trading port with Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, once known as the "Port of Timbuktu", and a famous example of Muslim, Jewish and European communities living side by side. The medina was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.

Best Things to Do in Essaouira

These are the sights this Essaouira travel guide recommends for a first visit.

Walk the Skala de la Ville ramparts

The sea ramparts on the north side of the medina are lined with old bronze cannons and give the classic views of waves crashing on the rocks. They are free and best at sunset.

See the port and the Skala du Port

The harbour is the heart of town: blue fishing boats, nets, boatyards and seagulls. Arrive between 7:00 and 10:00 to see the catch being unloaded (Nomado's fish market guide). The fortified Skala du Port has the best view over the harbour and the islands; entry is about 30–60 MAD for foreign adults, and it is open 9:00–17:00, according to Nomado.

Essaouira Fishing Port with Traditional Blue Boats and Seagulls

For the most atmospheric experience, visit Essaouira's fishing port between 7:00 and 10:00 in the morning. You can watch fishermen unload their catch, prepare their blue boats and sort freshly caught seafood while seagulls circle overhead. The harbour is especially lively at this time, making it a great place to photograph everyday life in this historic coastal town.

Eat grilled fish at the port

The grill stalls by the port fire up around 11:00. A plate of sardines costs about 30–40 MAD and a mixed fish plate about 50–70 MAD, according to Nomado; a full meal with salad and bread is about 50–80 MAD. Always agree the price before you sit down.

Explore the medina, the Mellah and the museums

The medina's grid of whitewashed lanes is easy to navigate compared with Fes or Marrakech. Look for woodworkers carving thuya wood, art galleries and spice shops. The Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, has synagogues and Star of David carvings, and the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah Museum, in a 19th-century house on Rue Laâlouj, opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 (Journey Beyond Travel). Bayt Dakira, a restored house dedicated to Essaouira's Jewish heritage, opened in 2020.

Hit the beach and the wind

The long, wide beach south of the medina is better for walking, camel and horse rides and water sports than for sunbathing, because of the wind. Essaouira is known as North Africa's wind capital, with the kitesurfing and windsurfing high season from April to September (Journey Beyond Travel). Beginners can book lessons at the beach clubs.

Where to Stay in Essaouira

Like other Moroccan medinas, the old town is car-free, so taxis drop you outside the walls and you walk or use a porter's handcart to your riad. Every area in this Essaouira travel guide is compared with that in mind.

Mariela Around the World recommends riads such as Riad Borj El Baroud and Villa Maroc in the medina, five-star hotels such as Heure Bleue, and budget options such as Atlantic Hostel and The Chill Art Hostel. Look for heating in winter and a sheltered terrace, because the wind can be strong.

The Gnaoua World Music Festival is usually held in late June; book accommodation early if you plan to go.

What to Eat in Essaouira

If this Essaouira travel guide has one food tip, it is to eat seafood as close to the boats as possible. Try:

Traditional Moroccan Fish Tagine and Seafood Pastilla in Essaouira
  • Grilled sardines and mixed fish at the port stalls (30–70 MAD a plate)
  • Fish tagine and seafood pastilla in medina restaurants
  • Argan oil and amlou (almond, argan and honey spread) from local cooperatives
  • Pastries and coffee: Mariela Around the World paid 28 MAD for lattes with pastries at Pâtisserie Driss

Journey Beyond Travel recommends Chez Sam at the port for fresh fish and La Table Madada for French-Moroccan cooking (reservations recommended).

Is Essaouira Safe?

Essaouira is one of the most relaxed and safest-feeling towns in Morocco, with far less hassle than Marrakech.
