2 Days in Essaouira: The Perfect Itinerary (2026) with Map & Prices

2 Days in Essaouira

2 days in Essaouira, in short: on Day 1, arrive from Marrakech by late morning, eat grilled fish at the port, climb the Skala du Port, explore the medina and watch sunset from the Skala de la Ville ramparts. On Day 2, see the boats come in at dawn, then choose the beach (surf or kite lesson, camel ride, walk to Diabat) or a slow culture day (Mellah, galleries, souks, cooking class and hammam). Two days is the ideal length: enough to relax, not just sightsee.

Most Essaouira itineraries online are lists of cafés without times or prices. This plan for 2 days in Essaouira is built around the town’s rhythm: the catch arrives early, the grills fire up at lunchtime, the Skala du Port closes in the late afternoon and the ramparts are best at sunset. It includes a map, prices, a windy-day version and a one-day version for day-trippers. For transport and background, see our Essaouira travel guide.

Map of Your 2 Days in Essaouira

Blue pins are Day 1, green pins are Day 2. Tap a pin for details, or open it in Google Maps. Diabat is off the default view: zoom out to see it.

Pins are approximate. Everything in the medina is within a 10–15 minute walk.

Before You Go

A few things to sort out before your 2 days in Essaouira:

  • Take a morning bus. Supratours takes about 3 hours from Marrakech, with fares of about $7–13 (Rome2Rio); book a day or two ahead.
  • Stay in the medina to walk everywhere; the east side near Bab Marrakech is closest to the bus stations. Compare areas in where to stay in Essaouira.
  • Pack a windbreaker and sunscreen. It is windy all year and the sun is strong.
  • Book Day 2 activities ahead in summer: surf and kite lessons, cooking classes and horse rides fill up.

Day 1: The Port, the Medina and a Sunset on the Ramparts

Day 1 of your 2 days in Essaouira is all on foot, from the harbour to the sea walls.

Late morning: arrive and check in

The bus stations are just outside the walls near Bab Marrakech. Taxis cannot enter the medina, so walk or use a porter's handcart to your riad, then head west through the main street towards the sea.

Lunch: the fish grills at the port

The port grills fire up around 11:00 and are busiest until 14:00 (Nomado). A plate of sardines costs about 30–40 MAD and a full meal with salad and bread about 50–80 MAD. Agree the price before you sit down, and ignore touts who steer you to a particular stall.

Afternoon: Skala du Port, Place Moulay Hassan and the museum

Climb the Skala du Port for the classic view over the boats and the medina walls (about 30–60 MAD, open until about 17:00). Then cross Place Moulay Hassan into the medina: browse the woodworkers and spice shops and visit the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah Museum, open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 (Journey Beyond Travel).

One of the best parts of exploring Essaouira is wandering through the medina at your own pace. Take time to browse the small woodcraft workshops, discover local spice shops and enjoy the atmosphere of the narrow streets. There is no need to rush through this part of the itinerary: the medina is best explored slowly, leaving enough time to walk towards the Skala de la Ville before sunset.

Sunset: the Skala de la Ville

Walk the sea ramparts with their bronze cannons as the sun drops into the Atlantic; this is the highlight of 2 days in Essaouira. For a drink with a view, The Wandering Quinn recommends the Taros rooftop and suggests arriving about 90 minutes before sunset to get a seat.

Dinner

Journey Beyond Travel recommends Chez Sam at the port for fresh fish and La Table Madada for French-Moroccan cooking (book ahead). Bucketlist Bri suggests Taros for live music most nights.

Day 2: Beach Day or Culture Day

Start Day 2 of your 2 days in Essaouira at the port between 7:00 and 10:00, when the boats unload their catch and the seagulls gather (Nomado). Then pick your option.

Option A: the beach, the wind and Diabat

Walk south along the wide beach. Essaouira is North Africa's wind capital, with the kitesurfing high season from April to September (Journey Beyond Travel), so book a two-hour surf or kite lesson with one of the beach schools, or take a camel or horse ride along the sand (agree the price first). Keep walking about 4 km to Diabat and the dunes around the Dar Sultan ruins, which have no entrance fee (MarocMama), and come back for sunset on the beach.

Wind Tip: Essaouira is known for its strong coastal winds, which often build from late morning into the afternoon. For a more comfortable beach experience, check local conditions and consider scheduling your surf or kitesurf lesson earlier in the day. Save the afternoon for exploring the medina, visiting galleries or enjoying a traditional hammam if the wind becomes too strong.

Option B: culture, crafts and a hammam

Option B suits travelers who want 2 days in Essaouira without the wind and sand.

  • Morning: a cooking class; Journey Beyond Travel lists L'Atelier Madada, from 10:00 to 14:00 (closed Sundays).
  • Afternoon: the Mellah and Bayt Dakira, galleries such as Galerie Damgaard, and the souks for thuya wood, argan oil and spices.
  • Late afternoon: a hammam; Bucketlist Bri lists Hammam Mounia and several spas.
  • Evening: dinner on a rooftop, or a final sunset on the ramparts.

One Day in Essaouira (Day Trip from Marrakech)

If you only have one day in Essaouira, follow Day 1: leave Marrakech early, arrive for lunch at the fish grills, then do the Skala du Port, the medina and the ramparts. The catch: about six hours on the road in total, and you will probably have to leave before sunset. A guided day trip is the easiest way to do it. See also our day trips from Marrakech.
