Best Things to Do in Chefchaouen Medina
1. Wander the blue medina early
The medina is the main reason to come, and Rough Guides quotes the Rough Guide to Morocco calling it “surely the prettiest in the country”. Walk it before 9:00, when the lanes are empty and the light is soft; tour groups arrive from about 10:00, according to Third Eye Traveller. There is no route to follow: walk uphill towards Ras El Maa and come back by a different lane.

Early morning is when Chefchaouen’s blue medina feels most peaceful. Before the shops open and visitors fill the narrow streets, you can enjoy the quiet atmosphere, hear the sound of footsteps on the stone lanes and see the soft morning light fall across the blue-painted walls. Take your time exploring the small alleys, noticing the colorful doors and flower pots along the way. It is also the best time to take photographs without crowds and appreciate the town at a slower pace.
2. Climb the Kasbah tower
The restored 15th-century Kasbah on Plaza Uta el-Hammam has a small ethnographic museum, an Andalusian garden, former prison cells and a tower with one of the best views of the rooftops. Entry is 60 MAD, according to Third Eye Traveller and Kiwi.com. The museum is small, with limited English labelling (MarocMama), so allow about an hour. Indicative hours are 9:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00 (Avygeo); check locally.

3. Sit in Plaza Uta el-Hammam
The main square is ringed by café terraces facing the Kasbah. It is quiet in the morning and lively after dark, when families come out and street musicians play, one of the simplest things to do in Chefchaouen in the evening.
4. See the Grand Mosque from outside
Next to the Kasbah, the 15th-century Grand Mosque has an unusual octagonal minaret influenced by Andalusian architecture. Only Muslims can enter, but the minaret is best seen from the Kasbah tower.

5. Watch sunset from the Spanish Mosque
Built by the Spanish in the 1920s on the hill east of town and opened to the public in 2010 (Rough Guides), the Spanish Mosque is the classic viewpoint over Chefchaouen. The path starts past Ras El Maa and takes 15–30 minutes. Sunset is the most popular time, so for a quieter visit go at sunrise. Bring a torch for the walk down.

6. Cool off at Ras El Maa
This spring just outside the eastern gate was the town’s original water source. Locals still do laundry in the stream, so ask before photographing people. Small cafés serve fresh orange juice for about 10 MAD, and it is a pleasant stop on the way to the Spanish Mosque.
7. Find the best photo streets
Photography is one of the most popular things to do in Chefchaouen, and the most photographed lanes are in the upper medina. Third Eye Traveller names Calle Sidi Buchuka as a free hotspot, and some residents charge about 5 MAD to pose on a decorated porch. Go early, keep moving if there is a queue, and remember that these are people’s homes.
8. Walk along the river
Below Ras El Maa, a path follows the stream past small cafés, art stalls and old mills. It is shaded and quiet in the afternoon, when the medina is at its busiest.

Things to Do in Chefchaouen for Food, Shopping and Relaxing
9. Browse the weekly souk
The weekly market is held on Mondays and Thursdays, according to MarocMama, when farmers from the Rif sell produce, herbs, spices and goat cheese. It is far less pushy than the souks of Marrakech or Fes. Sources disagree on the day (The Hotel Guru mentions a Sunday souk), so ask your riad before you plan around it.
10. Shop for handicrafts
Look for striped wool blankets, woven rugs, leather slippers and pottery. Journey Beyond Travel recommends the Hat Man on Rue Targui for hand-knitted hats and El Jabon Arte con la Abuela for handmade soap. Bargaining is expected, but it is relaxed.
11. Eat Rif food and tagines
Try jben (fresh local goat cheese), bissara (fava bean soup) and tagines. Set menus around Plaza Uta el-Hammam cost about 60 MAD (Third Eye Traveller). Rough Guides recommends Tissemlal for traditional dishes and La Lampe Magique (Casa Aladdin) for rooftop views, and Journey Beyond Travel suggests Casa Hassan and Lala Mesouda.

12. Go to a hammam
After a day on the hills, a hammam is a good way to warm up. A public hammam costs about 25 MAD, according to Journey Beyond Travel; bring sandals, soap and a towel, and check the men’s and women’s hours. Spa hammams cost from about 150 MAD.

13. Walk up to the Hotel Atlas viewpoint
For a view from the opposite side of the valley, walk uphill past the Hotel Atlas to a lookout above the town, as Journey Beyond Travel suggests. Bring water, and go in the late afternoon when the light hits the medina.
14. Hike to the Akchour waterfalls and God’s Bridge
This is the best of the outdoor things to do in Chefchaouen. Akchour is about 45 minutes away by taxi (MarocMama); a shared taxi costs about 40–50 MAD per person (Kiwi.com). From the trailhead, one path leads to God’s Bridge, a natural rock arch, and another follows the river past pools to the waterfalls. The walk to the first waterfall takes about two hours and is not very difficult, according to MarocMama. Guesthouses quote about 400 MAD for a guided trek without transport (Third Eye Traveller). Go on a weekday and wear shoes with grip.

15. Climb Jebel el-Kelaa
The 1,616 m peak behind the town is a full-day hike of about 20 km, mostly uphill, according to Third Eye Traveller. Parts of the trail are unmarked and there is no phone signal, so go with a guide or a downloaded route, and start early.
16. Trek in Talassemtane National Park
The national park east of town has cedar and fir forests, gorges and villages. Two-day treks combine Chefchaouen and Akchour; local guides and gîtes arrange them. Spring and autumn are best.
17. Spend a day at Oued Laou beach
In summer, the Mediterranean village of Oued Laou is about two hours away by shared taxi or private driver (Rough Guides). It is a simple, local beach town, a good contrast to the mountains.
