Best Things to Do in Tangier's Kasbah and Medina

1. Explore the Kasbah and the Bab Haha viewpoint

The Kasbah sits on the highest point of the old city. Walk through its whitewashed lanes to Bab Haha, a gate in the walls with views across the Strait to the Rock of Gibraltar on clear days, as Vagrants of the World describes. It is one of the best free things to do in Tangier.

One of the highlights of exploring Tangier's Kasbah is the view from its old defensive walls. On a clear day, you can look across the Strait of Gibraltar towards Spain and the Rock of Gibraltar, with fishing boats and ferries crossing the water below. Take a few minutes to enjoy the view and capture some photos, especially in the soft morning light.

2. Visit the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures

Housed in the Dar el Makhzen palace, the museum traces the region's history from prehistory and has an Andalusian garden; the old prison next door is now a contemporary art space. A combined ticket costs about 30 MAD and both are closed on Tuesdays, according to Le360 (March 2026); Malika in Morocco lists 60 MAD, so check at the door.

3. Have tea at Café Baba

This tiny café inside the Kasbah has welcomed famous visitors for decades, according to Vagrants of the World. Order a mint tea and look at the old photos on the walls.

4. Shop the medina souks

Tangier's medina is smaller and calmer than those of Fes or Marrakech. Look for leather goods, ceramics, textiles and spices, and bargain politely.

5. Sit in the Petit Socco

This small square of old cafés was the heart of Tangier's International Zone days (1923–1956, Wikipedia). It is a good place to watch the medina go by over a coffee or mint tea.

6. Walk the Grand Socco and Mendoubia gardens

The big square between the medina and the new town is lively all day. Next to it are the shady Mendoubia gardens and the Cinémathèque de Tanger in the restored Cinema Rif, a favourite of local creatives (Le360).

7. Visit the American Legation Museum

The first American public property abroad and the only US National Historic Landmark outside the United States (Wikipedia). It has a wing on Paul Bowles and works by Claudio Bravo and Marguerite McBey. Entry is about 20 MAD and it is closed on Sundays (Le360); Malika in Morocco lists 50 MAD.

8. See St Andrew's Church

This Anglican church near the Grand Socco is built in a Moorish style, with a bell tower that looks like a minaret. MarocMama recommends it as one of the most unusual sights in the city.

9. Discover the Lorin Foundation

Housed in one of Tangier's oldest synagogues, built in 1880, this small museum shows photographs and documents of the city's history. There is no fixed fee, but a tip for the curator is appreciated; it is closed on Saturdays (Malika in Morocco).

10. Visit Dar Niaba and Villa Harris

Dar Niaba, Morocco's first foreign-affairs building, shows paintings of Morocco by Western artists (20–30 MAD, closed Tuesdays). Villa Harris, a late-19th-century villa with a garden, houses the Tangier Museum of modern Moroccan and Orientalist art, also closed on Tuesdays (Le360).

Outdoor Things to Do in Tangier: Coast and Day Trips

11. Watch the sunset from Café Hafa

A series of simple terraces on the cliffs of the Marshan district, with views across the Strait to Spain. Watching the sunset here over mint tea is one of the most classic things to do in Tangier.

12. Visit the Caves of Hercules and Cap Spartel

About 9 miles west, roughly 18 minutes by taxi (MarocMama), the Cap Spartel lighthouse marks the meeting of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Just south, the Caves of Hercules have a sea opening shaped like a map of Africa; entry is 60 MAD for foreign adults, open daily 10:00–21:00 (Showcaves.com, 2023 prices).

13. Drive out to Cap Malabata

About 6 miles east of the city, Cap Malabata has a lighthouse and an early 20th-century castle, with views back over Tangier Bay (MarocMama). Go in the late afternoon for the best light.

14. Relax on the beach and the corniche

The rebuilt corniche and city beach are busy with families in summer. For quieter sand, head west to the Atlantic beaches beyond Cap Spartel.

15. Take a cooking class

Learn to cook tagine and Moroccan salads; MarocMama recommends Blue Door Cuisine. Classes usually include a market visit and lunch.

16. Take a day trip to Asilah, Tetouan or Chefchaouen

Asilah is a whitewashed seaside town south of Tangier, known for its murals; Tetouan has a UNESCO-listed medina; and the blue town of Chefchaouen is about 2.5–3 hours away.
