2 Days in Chefchaouen: The Perfect Itinerary (2026) with Map & Prices

2 Days in Chefchaouen

2 days in Chefchaouen, in short: on Day 1, arrive by midday, explore the blue medina and the Kasbah (60 MAD), stop at Ras El Maa and watch sunset from the Spanish Mosque. On Day 2, either hike to the Akchour waterfalls and God’s Bridge (about 45 minutes away) or take a slow day in town with a dawn photo walk, the souk and a hammam. Two days is the ideal length for Chefchaouen: enough to see everything and enjoy the empty lanes early in the morning.

Most Chefchaouen itineraries online either rush the town in a few hours or leave Day 2 vague. This plan for 2 days in Chefchaouen is built around timing, because in Chefchaouen the time of day matters more than the route: the medina is empty at dawn, the Kasbah closes at lunchtime, and the best light is at sunset. It includes prices, a map, a rainy-day version and a one-day version. For transport and background, see our Chefchaouen travel guide.

Before You Go

A few things to sort out before your 2 days in Chefchaouen:

  • Arrive by midday. Take a morning bus: CTM takes about 4 hours from Fes and 2.5–3 hours from Tangier. There is no train.
  • Stay in the medina so you can walk out at dawn; near Bab el-Ain is easiest with luggage. Compare areas in where to stay in Chefchaouen.
  • Plan Day 2 around the weekday: the souk is usually on Monday and Thursday (ask your riad), and Akchour is quieter on weekdays.
  • Bring cash for entry fees, taxis, juice stands and small restaurants.

Day 1: The Blue Medina and a Spanish Mosque Sunset

Day 1 of your 2 days in Chefchaouen is all on foot and follows the light: the medina in the afternoon, the viewpoints at sunset.

Late morning: arrive and check in

Taxis from the bus station drop you at Bab el-Ain for 10–20 MAD (Kiwi.com). Leave your bags at the riad and head for the main square.

Lunch: Plaza Uta el-Hammam

Have lunch on a café terrace facing the Kasbah. Set menus cost about 60 MAD (Third Eye Traveller); try a tagine or bissara, and local goat cheese.

Afternoon: the Kasbah and the upper medina

The Kasbah (60 MAD) has a small museum, an Andalusian garden and a tower with views over the rooftops and the octagonal minaret of the Grand Mosque. Indicative hours are 9:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00 (Avygeo), so go after it reopens. Then walk uphill through Plaza El Haouta and the blue lanes towards Ras El Maa, the most photogenic part of town.

One of the highlights of the first day in Chefchaouen is reaching the upper medina and discovering its quiet blue alleys along the way to Ras El Maa. The contrast between the blue-painted walls, colourful flower pots and mountain scenery makes this part of the walk especially memorable. Take your time, stop for photos and enjoy the slower pace before heading up to the Spanish Mosque for sunset.

Late afternoon: Ras El Maa

Stop at the spring outside the eastern gate for a fresh orange juice (about 10 MAD). Locals wash clothes here, so ask before taking photos of people.

Sunset: the Spanish Mosque

From Ras El Maa, the path up to the Spanish Mosque takes about 15–30 minutes. Leave about an hour before sunset to get a good spot; the view over the whole blue town is the highlight of 2 days in Chefchaouen. Bring a torch for the walk down.

Dinner

Back in the medina, Vagrants of the World and Destinationless Travel both recommend Cafe Clock, a rooftop restaurant; Journey Beyond Travel suggests Casa Hassan for fire-cooked tagines. Finish with mint tea on Plaza Uta el-Hammam.

Day 2: Akchour Waterfalls or a Slow Day in Town

Start Day 2 of your 2 days in Chefchaouen the same way either way: a photo walk at 7:00–8:00, before tour groups arrive around 10:00 (Third Eye Traveller). Then choose your option.

Option A: Akchour waterfalls and God’s Bridge (full day)

Akchour is about 45 minutes away at the edge of Talassemtane National Park. A shared taxi costs about 40–50 MAD per person each way (Kiwi.com); private tours usually run from about 9:00 to 16:00, according to Destinationless Travel. From the trailhead, one path leads to God’s Bridge, a natural rock arch, and another follows the river to the waterfalls; the walk to the first waterfall takes about two hours and is not very difficult (MarocMama). Bring water, snacks and shoes with grip, and swim in the pools in summer.

Option B: a slow day in Chefchaouen

Option B suits travelers who want 2 days in Chefchaouen without a long hike, or when rain closes the trails.

Traditional souk in Chefchaouen with stalls selling woven blankets and handmade crafts
  • Morning: the weekly souk if it is market day, then shop for wool blankets, rugs and handmade soap.
  • Midday: lunch, then the shaded river walk below Ras El Maa.
  • Afternoon: walk up past the Hotel Atlas to a viewpoint over the medina, or join a cooking class. Destinationless Travel describes a 16:00–19:00 class on a family farm near the Spanish Mosque viewpoint.
  • Evening: a public hammam (about 25 MAD, Journey Beyond Travel), then dinner on a rooftop.

For more ideas, see our full list of things to do in Chefchaouen. Hikers can add a third day for Jebel el-Kelaa or Talassemtane.

One Day in Chefchaouen

If you only have one day in Chefchaouen, follow Day 1 but start with the dawn photo walk if you stayed overnight: medina at 7:00, Kasbah at 9:00, lunch on the square, Ras El Maa, then sunset at the Spanish Mosque. We do not recommend a day trip from Fes: it means about eight hours on the road for a few hours in town, and you miss the quiet morning and evening.

2 Days in Chefchaouen: FAQs

Is 2 days in Chefchaouen enough?

Yes. Two days covers the medina, the Kasbah, Ras El Maa, the Spanish Mosque sunset and either the Akchour waterfalls or a relaxed day in town. Add a third day only for longer hikes.

Is one day in Chefchaouen enough?

One day covers the main sights, but stay overnight if you can: the empty early-morning lanes are the best part of a visit.

Can you visit Chefchaouen as a day trip from Fes?

You can, but it means about eight hours on the road. An overnight stay is much better.

What is the best way to combine Chefchaouen with other cities?

The usual route is Fes → Chefchaouen → Tangier, or the reverse. Two nights in Chefchaouen fit well between three days in Fes and a day in Tangier.

Should I book the Akchour hike in advance?

Not necessarily: shared taxis leave from town. Book a guided tour if you want transport, a guide and the longer trails handled for you.

Is this Chefchaouen itinerary up to date?

Yes. It was last updated in October 2026. Prices, bus times and opening hours change, especially during Ramadan, so confirm them locally.
