Tangier Travel Guide 2026: Best Sights, Ferry Tips & Where to Stay

Tangier Travel Guide

Tangier travel guide in brief: Tangier is Morocco’s gateway to Europe, a port city on the Strait of Gibraltar just an hour by ferry from Tarifa in Spain and 2 hours 10 minutes from Casablanca on the Al Boraq high-speed train. Plan two days: one for the medina, the Kasbah and the American Legation, one for the Caves of Hercules, Cap Spartel and the beaches. Stay in a riad in the medina or Kasbah for atmosphere, or in the new town for convenience, and visit from May to October for the best weather.

For decades Tangier had a reputation for hustlers, but the city has changed a lot: the port has been redeveloped, the corniche rebuilt, and the medina, Kasbah and museums restored. This Tangier travel guide covers how to get there from Spain and the rest of Morocco, how long to stay, the best sights with 2026 prices, where to stay, the best time to visit and how to avoid the few remaining annoyances. It is part of our Morocco travel guide.

A Short History of Tangier

Tangier has been fought over for more than 2,000 years by Phoenicians, Romans, Portuguese, Spanish and British, thanks to its position on the Strait. The great 14th-century traveler Ibn Battuta was born here in 1304. From 1923 to 1956, Tangier was an international zone governed by several foreign powers, which attracted spies, bankers, smugglers and writers. Paul Bowles lived and wrote here for more than half a century, and William S. Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch in the city (Wikipedia).

Best Things to Do in Tangier

These are the sights this Tangier travel guide recommends for a first visit.

Explore the Kasbah and its museums

On the highest point of the medina, the Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures occupies the Dar el Makhzen palace, with collections from prehistory onwards and an Andalusian garden. The former Kasbah prison next door is now a contemporary art space. A combined ticket for both costs 30 MAD and both close on Tuesdays, according to Le360 (March 2026); Malika in Morocco lists a higher price of 60 MAD, so check at the door.

Visit the American Legation Museum

Tucked into the medina, this is the only US National Historic Landmark outside the United States (Wikipedia). It has a wing dedicated to Paul Bowles and works by Claudio Bravo and Marguerite McBey. Entry is about 20 MAD and it is closed on Sundays, according to Le360; Malika in Morocco lists 50 MAD.

Wander the medina, Grand Socco and Petit Socco

The Grand Socco is the lively square between the medina and the new town, next to the Mendoubia gardens and the Cinémathèque de Tanger in the old Cinema Rif. From there, walk down into the medina to the Petit Socco, a tiny square of cafés that was the centre of International Zone life.

One of the most charming corners of Tangier's medina is the network of narrow lanes between the Grand Socco and Petit Socco. This is where you can enjoy the city's everyday atmosphere, browse small traditional shops, discover hidden cafés and admire the whitewashed architecture. Take your time rather than following a strict route, as some of the nicest details are found in the smaller side streets.

Drink mint tea at Café Hafa

Tangier's most famous café is a series of simple terraces stepping down the cliff in the Marshan district, with views across the Strait to Spain. Come in the late afternoon for sunset.

See the Caves of Hercules and Cap Spartel

About 14 km west of the city, the Caves of Hercules have a sea opening said to look like a map of Africa. Entry is 60 MAD for foreign adults and they open daily from 10:00 to 21:00, according to Showcaves.com (2023 prices). Nearby, the Cap Spartel lighthouse marks the point where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.

Other museums and the seafront

Dar Niaba, Morocco's first foreign-affairs building, shows Western paintings of Morocco (20–30 MAD, closed Tuesdays), and Villa Harris, a late-19th-century villa with a garden, houses the Tangier Museum of modern Moroccan and Orientalist art (Le360). End the day with a walk along the rebuilt corniche and the city beach.

Is Tangier Safe?

Tangier is generally safe and far calmer than its old reputation suggests. The main annoyances are unofficial guides at the port and in the medina, and taxi drivers who "forget" the meter. Say no firmly to unsolicited guides, use the meter or agree the fare before getting in, keep valuables out of sight in crowded lanes and avoid empty medina alleys late at night.
